red a huge chink my already ragged armor of self control. A mocha frappe can really change my attitude. Mere frugality was keeping me in line previously. Then I discovered McDonalds. One could never say I was "anti-McDonalds" - certainly not to the point of boycotting it or anything - but I've not previously been a fan.
Though, I confess, I am famously remembered for the time (the September I started homeschooling Aidan, came down with a severe case of pneumonia and was trying to master the most difficult time of my work year simultaneously) when after feeding him McDonalds the third or fourth time in as many days said, "Why don't you have the fish sandwich so you have a more well-rounded diet?"
But, apart from that foray into junk-food living, we really don't do McDonalds much. (In addition to forbidding trampoline-jumping I also refused to buy "Happy Meals"). Label me a meanie.
Until....I tried my first mocha frappe. Sooooooo good. Just as good as Starbucks or our local chain, Beaners. And CHEAPER!!! Also, so unlike the McDonalds we are used to (and unlike the more upscale places) they have a small size. Yes!
There is a little something lacking in the ambiance, I admit that. Instead of the leather lounge chairs, the fireplace, the erudite-types on their laptops...well... you know. It just is not the same.
Tonight I had one of my most jarring episodes, ambiance-wise. We attempted to avoid the ambiance-issue altogether by going through the drive-through. I have a little "thing" for the whipped cream, so I asked them to not put the lid on. They were happy to oblige - the cashier turned and bellowed:
"Hey! Hey, you! She don't want no lid on that frap thing!"

LOL!! I love those kind of cold iced things too and you´ve got me wanting one now at 5 in the morning!!
I have to try it now! :)
Some years ago, I was addicted to McD's m&m mcflurries. I HAD to have one at least once a week. Until the weight gain became noticeable, I didn't stop! And, like you, I had my fetish. I could not eat it unless it had extra m&m's and they were all on top (not stirred in). It was difficult to get my point across sometimes and when they got it wrong, I would send it back. I became so obsessed with that ice-cream!
Oh, I do love other people's bad grammar, that is as long as it doesn't belong to one of my kids.
I am a tea drinker myself. The though of cold coffee beverages grosses me out.
That's funny, we weren't allowed Happy Meals either. I guess my parents saw through the marketing schemes.
My small group (in Russia) discovered McDonald's recently, too. Before that, it had been kind of a taboo. No one would admit to going there, we were all too "holy" and not into capitalism. But now we go almost every Sunday, if only to buy something small like an ice-cream cone, and sit for two hours!
LOL that's some great ambience, for sure. Hard plastic, bright colors of orange and red and orange again, vinyl... ugh. And I don't care for the new lattes and things but will have to try the frap thing now. My last trip to Starbucks seriously cost me $7.50, now I can't go for another 2 weeks! (but oh seriously, it was soooo good, I got triple espresso in a frapaccino thing).
Hmm, I'll have to try one sometime. :)
I had my first McCafe experience in Moscow! Katya and I had cappuccinos -- they make this frothy milk with chocolate or cinnamon sprinkles and call it babyccino for the kids -- at the McDonalds on Old Arbat across the street from our hotel during our American Embassy trip. (Tamara introduced us to the babyccinos.)
Soon after, I saw my first McCafe in the US and got my husband hooked on them.
Personally, though, I don't care for fussy coffee drinks, I prefer my coffeemaker at home. But they tasted very good in Moscow somehow! Must have been the ambiance...
I hate coffee and even the smell of it but do frequent the McD's often when I'm lazy. I do admit that my daughter did get Happy Meals as a kid and she turned out to be a trim, gourmet cook so I guess it didn't harm her.
The McD's cold coffee frappe sure beats the price of Starbucks. Is it as good?
We get McDonalds "senior" coffee everytime we go on a road trip. I love their coffee, it is soooo strong.
I must admit my kids ate their share of McDonalds!!
At least the wait staff was speaking English. Something you dont hear much of here in said location!
Annie, when in Moscow, did you go to their McD's? The front looked like the McD's of the 50's, but around the corner they had the loveliest little cafe! Red leatherette banquettes, delicious coffee, and best of all: THEY BAKED CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES TO ORDER AND SERVED THEM WARM!!! yummmmy.....
I will have to say my co-workers and I have been hooked since last summer! I have moved to the iced coffee at MCD's lately though - it's still sweet and oh, so cheap! AND, Moscow McDonalds was a life saver for us!! Even though I'm not a fan of fast food myself, loved the one in Moscow and it was actually a great activity for all of us with our limited ability to converse verbally at the time.
Now I will have to try one.
You crack me up. This post had me laughing out loud.
